It is important to make sure that you are doing everything you can in order to keep your propane tank in the best possible condition. To help you do just that, you will want to take the time to review the following tips.

Keep The Snow Off The Top

You do not have to worry about keeping the top of the propane tank completely clear during the winter, as that is nearly impossible in many areas. However, you will want to keep large amounts of snow from piling on top of the tank. The reason for this is that the extra weight from the compacted snow can dent the metal tank. The extra moisture can also cause your propane tank to rust prematurely. Therefore, if snow piles up on the propane tank, you will want to take a few moments to brush it off with a broom.

Keep An Eye Out For Leaks

You do not want to spend more on the cost of energy in your building because you are losing a lot of propane. Even a small loss of propane will add up over time. To help keep an eye out for leaks, you will want to wait for a dry day outside and then place a large piece of flat cardboard on the ground beneath the tank. Just make sure that you are securing the cardboard in place so that it does not fly away in the wind. You can do this by placing a few rocks or bricks along the edges of the cardboard. Just leave the cardboard under the propane tank for the majority of the day and you can then slide it out and inspect it for spots of propane fuel that may have leaked out of the tank.

Keep A Quality Cap On The Tank

Do not make the mistake of assuming that just because the cap still technically goes on over the opening to the tank that it is going to be good enough. If the cap does not securely sit in place, then there is a chance that dirt and various other types of debris will make its way into your fuel supply. Then, if the dirty propane fuel gets into your heating equipment, stove, or anything else that it fuels, you could end up with a lot of problems. Therefore, you want to make sure that you are occasionally checking to make sure that the cap is properly secured to the tank. If it isn't, then you need a new one.

With those couple of tips in mind, you should have no trouble making sure that you are keeping your propane tank in the best shape possible. Visit Northwest Propane LLC for more information.
